Herbology
TCM practitioners have utitlized medicinal herbs for thousands of years. Historically, the use and function of these herbs were recorded every time they were used in order to establish their efficacy and proper and safe consumption. This extensive history makes Chinese herbs the most well-studied and understood substances in medicine.
Today, they continue to be closely examined to expand our knowledge of their appropriate application. Chinese herbs are a time tested, evidence based aspect of TCM that goes hand in hand with acupuncture.
Chinese herbs are usually prescribed in a formula, a specific combination of herbs, and can be used either independently or in conjunction with acupuncture as a way to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment. By using a formula, instead of a single herb, TCM practitioners maximize the efficacy of the herbs and prevent side-effects and toxicity, especially when a person is taking other medications. Make sure to tell your practitioner about any medications you are taking so that the correct formula is prescribed. |
