Losing weight is another very common side effect of cancer treatment. In a short period of time, people can lose a lot of weight. This becomes a problem. Sometimes loved ones, who haven’t seen the patient for a while, can’t even recognize them. From a Chinese Medicine point of view, this weight loss translates to a big loss of Qi and blood. We need to help the body rebuild by tonifying the Qi, nourishing the blood and strengthening the kidneys. Sometimes, we may also see a change in thickness. If there are a lot of toxins in the system, we may see a dark mark on the face. That shows us that there are too many toxins there. Just as toxins can irritate the peripheral nerves, they may also stay in the face. This gives us an idea that something is off. Observing visual changes in the patient is a tool we use to help determine the patient’s state. If your acupuncturist didn’t make these observations and didn’t check your tongue and pulse, that means that they didn’t do a proper treatment.
